From time to time, instead of my usual email with one big idea you can read in 3 minutes or less, I share with you the best of what I’m reading, watching, and exploring. Enjoy!
Books
Acid for the Children by Flea. For all you Red Hot Chili Peppers fans—and even if you’re not—this book is a fascinating ride. Narrated by Flea himself, this memoir walks you through his wild early days before the band’s formation. From his young adulthood filled with raw and over-the-top experiences, to his deep love of literature influenced by the likes of Vonnegut, this book feels like sitting down with an old friend who has the most fascinating stories to tell.
Shows
Nobody Wants This. [Netflix] Easily one of my favorite shows of the year. It’s about a sex podcaster and a newly single rabbi navigating their unlikely love story. The result? A hilarious and witty rom-com.
Films
The Substance (2024). [Amazon Prime | Apple TV+] Wow, what a wild ride. This deeply disturbing thriller exposes the dark underbelly of society’s fixation on beauty and youth. Demi Moore and Dennis Quaid are beyond brilliant and deserve all the awards.
Man Up (2015). [Amazon Prime | Apple TV+] I watched this on a recent international flight and couldn’t have picked a better airplane movie. It’s light, funny, and exactly what you need to forget you’re miles above the earth.
Memories of Murder (2003). [Apple TV+] Directed by Bong Joon-ho of Parasite fame, this is one of his earlier masterpieces. More than just a detective movie, it’s an exploration of obsession and failure, wrapped up in the guise of a murder mystery. It’s dark, it’s compelling, and it stays with you long after the credits roll.
Album
Bread by Sofi Tukker. This album has been playing on repeat for me this year. In terms of feel, think upbeat dance party. My favorites on the album are “Perfect Someone” and “Jacare”.
