From time to time, instead of my usual email with one big idea you can read in 3 minutes or less, I share with you the best of what I’m reading, watching, and exploring. Enjoy!

Books

Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe. I’m usually skeptical about celebrity memoirs, but this one caught me off guard—in a good way. Rob Lowe’s recounting of Hollywood in the ’80s is not only charming and self-deprecating but also packed with wild stories that give you a backstage pass to the era. I’d highly recommend the audio version—Lowe mimics all the famous voices himself, and his impersonations are hilarious (Christopher Walken was my favorite). It’s like sitting down with an old friend who just happens to be a star.

Shows

Slow Horses Season 1. [Apple TV+] I’m admittedly late to the party, having just watched Season 1 as Season 4 dropped. This series is a masterclass in espionage drama. Gary Oldman is amazing as the grumpiest spy boss ever, turning what could be a standard spy story into something you can’t stop watching. The blend of suspense and awkward office antics is just perfect.

Only Murders in the Building Season 4. [Hulu] It’s rare for a show to rebound in its fourth season, but this one does just that. I just watched Episode 3 last night, and it was so funny that I found myself rewinding to catch every hilarious detail.

The Bear Season 3. [Hulu] This one felt a bit like that third album from your favorite band—not quite a classic, but still has a couple of chart-toppers. “Napkins” and “Ice Chips” are standout episodes that delve into the personal lives of the staff at the Original Beef of Chicagoland. Still a good watch, even if it’s lost a bit of its initial seasoning.

Films

Paris is Burning. [Max] Brilliant documentary. From the description: “This landmark documentary provides a vibrant snapshot of the 1980s through the eyes of New York City’s African American and Latinx Harlem drag-ball scene. Made over seven years, Paris is Burning offers an intimate portrait of rival fashion ‘houses,’ from fierce contests for trophies to house mothers offering sustenance in a world rampant with homophobia, transphobia, racism, AIDS, and poverty.”

Music

Get a Good Look by Sports. This album is a perfect end-of-summer vibe, blending elements of synth-pop and indie rock with catchy, upbeat tunes. My favorites are “Tell You Something” and “Baby Baby.”
